Crater lake resorts — Ethiopia's favourite weekend escape, just 45 minutes from Addis
Welcome to Bishoftu
Bishoftu — also known by its older name Debre Zeit — is Ethiopia's premier weekend destination for Addis Ababa residents. Set in the Rift Valley escarpment 45km south-east of the capital, the town is built around four spectacular crater lakes: Lake Hora, Lake Bishoftu, Lake Kuriftu and Lake Babogaya. The crater lake setting — dark water surrounded by steep volcanic walls draped in papyrus and acacia — is genuinely beautiful and unlike anything near Addis.
The lakeside hotels and resorts of Bishoftu are where Addis Ababa's professional and middle class come to decompress. Several well-run resorts offer swimming pools, boat trips on the crater lakes, Ethiopian and international restaurants, and comfortable rooms in a setting that feels a world away from the capital's traffic.
Bishoftu is particularly popular with the Ethiopian diaspora as a comfortable first stop on visiting Ethiopia — close to Addis airport but with a much more relaxed atmosphere than the capital.

Best time to visit Bishoftu
October through May offers the most reliable weekend weather — clear, warm days perfect for swimming pools, boat trips and lakeside dining. Weekends and Ethiopian public holidays are busiest; book ahead. Avoid the heaviest rains in July and August when crater-lake roads can become slick.
