Where to sleep near the Danakil Depression

The Danakil is one of Earth's most extreme landscapes — and one of its least-served by online booking. We list the staging hotels in Mekelle and Semera plus the camps and basic lodges used on Erta Ale and Dallol expeditions.

How accommodation works in the Danakil

There are no luxury hotels inside the Depression itself — temperatures hit 50°C and infrastructure is minimal. Most visitors join an organised expedition (3–4 days) that includes basic camp stays at Erta Ale's rim and at Hamed Ela near Dallol. The expedition starts and ends in Mekelle (Tigray) or Semera (Afar) where you'll want a comfortable hotel for the night before and after.

  • Mekelle — Tigray's regional capital, the classic staging base
  • Semera — Afar regional capital, alternative starting point
  • Erta Ale base camp — rim lodging on volcano expeditions
  • Hamed Ela / Ahmedela — basic camp near the Dallol sulphur springs

Trip planning

Danakil expeditions run year-round but November to February is the most comfortable. You'll need a registered tour operator, an Afar guide and an armed scout — book accommodation in Mekelle or Semera for the night before departure and the night after return, and let your operator handle the in-Depression camps.
