Northern circuit

Accommodation along Ethiopia's Historic Route

Stay in verified hotels at every UNESCO stop on the northern circuit — from the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela to Gondar's royal castles, the obelisks of Axum and the lakeshore of Bahir Dar.

The full Historic Route in five stops

The classic Historic Route loops through Addis Ababa, Bahir Dar, Gondar, Axum and Lalibela. Most travellers cover it in 8–14 days, with internal Ethiopian Airlines flights connecting each city. We list verified properties at every stop so you can book the whole circuit without leaving the platform.

  • Addis Ababa — international arrival, brief acclimatisation, Entoto views
  • Bahir Dar — Lake Tana, Blue Nile Falls, monastery island guesthouses
  • Gondar — Fasil Ghebbi castles and Debre Berhan Selassie
  • Axum — Stelae Field, ancient capital, hotels near the obelisks
  • Lalibela — eleven rock-hewn churches, pilgrim guesthouses and heritage hotels

Why book Historic Route hotels with us

Most international booking sites have very thin Ethiopia inventory and almost no presence in Lalibela, Gondar or Axum. Every property on Ethiopia Bookings has been visited and verified by our local teams, with same-day support in English and Amharic and payment in ETB via Telebirr or CBE Birr.

When to travel the Historic Route

October to March is the peak window — dry, clear and perfect for Lalibela's Genna (Christmas) celebrations on 7 January and Timkat (Epiphany) on 19 January, when Gondar fills with pilgrims. Book three months ahead for either festival; off-peak rates run April through September.
