Stay near the rock-hewn churches — one of Christianity's holiest sites

Welcome to Lalibela

Lalibela sits at 2,630 metres in the highlands of northern Ethiopia and is home to one of the greatest architectural achievements in history. The eleven rock-hewn churches — carved directly into the red volcanic rock between the 7th and 13th centuries — draw pilgrims and travellers from across the world to what UNESCO describes as an 'eighth wonder.' This is among the most sacred destinations in Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity, and visiting during the major festivals transforms the churches into seas of white-robed worshippers.

Despite its fame, Lalibela remains a small highland town. Accommodation is concentrated in two clusters: the area around the main church complex in the south of town, and the newer hotel developments on the road coming in from Lalibela Airport. The standard of accommodation has improved significantly in the last decade, with several excellent boutique lodges and heritage hotels now operating alongside more basic guesthouses serving the religious pilgrimage market.

Most international visitors spend two to three nights in Lalibela — enough time to visit both church clusters (northern and southern groups), explore the ancient village of Asheton Maryam by mule, and absorb the extraordinary atmosphere of this highland pilgrimage town. Timkat (Ethiopian Epiphany, celebrated in January) and Lalibela's own version of Genna (Ethiopian Christmas) are among the most visually spectacular religious celebrations anywhere in Africa.

Best time to visit Lalibela

The best time to visit Lalibela is October through February — the dry season when clear skies and mild temperatures make exploring the churches comfortable. Timkat (Ethiopian Epiphany) in mid-January is the most spectacular time to visit: tens of thousands of white-robed pilgrims fill the churches and surrounding area in a ceremony unlike anything else on earth. Ethiopian Christmas (Genna) in early January is also exceptional. Avoid July–September when the highland rains can be heavy.
