How this checker works
Select the country that issued your passport. The checker returns Ethiopia's current entry rule for that nationality — visa-free, e-visa required, or embassy visa required — along with the maximum permitted stay and the official cost in US dollars. The data is sourced from the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs e-visa portal (evisa.mofa.gov.et) and the Ethiopian Immigration and Nationality Affairs Main Department, and reviewed quarterly. Dual nationals should select the passport they intend to travel on.
The checker covers tourist entry only. If you are travelling for business, journalism, NGO work, diplomatic duty, study or to take up residence, the visa rules are different — apply through the nearest Ethiopian embassy or consulate.
Ethiopia visa categories at a glance
Visa-free entry
East African Community passport holders — Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo — enter Ethiopia without a visa for stays up to 90 days. Djibouti and Eritrea have separate bilateral arrangements.
e-Visa (most travellers)
UK, US, EU, Canadian, Australian, Gulf and most other passport holders apply online at evisa.mofa.gov.et. USD 52 single entry, USD 72 multiple entry. Processing 3–5 business days. Tourist stays up to 30 or 90 days.
Embassy visa required
A small number of nationalities cannot use the e-visa system and must apply at an Ethiopian embassy or consulate. The checker will tell you if this applies to your passport.
No visa on arrival
Ethiopia no longer issues visas on arrival to most nationalities. You must hold a valid e-visa or embassy visa before boarding your flight to Addis Ababa.
